Back to School in Uganda

Monika is excited to be going back to school!

There’s a buzz in the air as kids in Uganda get ready to go back to school next week.  They’re just finishing their summer vacation and the new year goes from February until November.

When I tell you kids in Uganda are desperate to go to school, it’s not an exaggeration.  An education is seen as the way out of poverty.

While schools are back in session, not all children will be back in school. Unless families can pay for tuition, materials, and a uniform kids cannot attend.

The other reality is, that if a family has to choose which child gets to go to school, it will most often be the boy in the family.  This is heartbreaking for so many kids.

Because of your generosity, ten children who would not otherwise be able, are going back to school!  For some students, we’ve been able to fund their full school year. For others, we’ve been able to fund their first semester and we will continue raising funds throughout the year.

There are so many children in Kamuli who need help to go to school and we can’t help them all. The children we are supporting this year are living in the most dire of circumstances, but are determined to learn.

Some of you have heard the stories of a few of these children already. I thought you would enjoy meeting our “class of 2024.”

Emmanuel, Martha, Talifa, Mirabu, Gad, and Eddison are all orphans living in very challenging conditions.  Eddison is in high school and has been working several jobs to try and support himself. The other children are being raised by elderly grandparents who are struggling to make ends meet.

Monika, Sharifa, Alex, and Prossy are raised by single mothers with very few resources.

We’re as excited as the kids for next week. We can’t wait to see them in their uniforms all ready for their first day.

Remember when you had that excitement?  For kids in Uganda that doesn’t go away as they get older. They put a very high value on education and consider it a privilege.

Each and every one of the kids you are helping were overjoyed when they knew they could go back to school!

We hope someday the system will change in Uganda, and all kids can go to school for free. Until then we will keep doing what we can for the most vulnerable children.

With Gratitude,

Mary

P.S. If you would like to help keep these kids in school it’s easy to donate.
