Educating a Girl Changes Everything

Fazilah’s family couldn’t afford to send her back to school after the pandemic.  She was feeling desperate with nowhere else to turn.

Fazilah heard about our vocational skilling center in Buwudha, Uganda from a friend. She showed up one day and asked if she could join our tailoring program. She didn’t know how to use a sewing machine but was so excited to get started.

Unfortunately Fazilah’s story is the same for so many girls in Uganda who cannot go to school.  They come each day looking for an education so they can support themselves.  The drive these girls have for an education, despite all their challenges, is inspiring.

Yes, that Really Happens

So much that a girl experiences in Uganda is hard for us to imagine.  Girls are often seen as not worth educating.  Only 21% of girls in Uganda go on to secondary (high) school.  They are often forced into early marriage, and are at increased risk of violence with very few options to support themselves.

Our skilling center grew from seeing the need of these girls in the community, and the push to open was from Prossy and Betty, the strong women on our team in Uganda.

Fashion Forward

Fazilah is getting more confident and creative each week.  She and the other girls have come up with some eye-catching designs using the colorful Ugandan fabrics!

The community is taking notice and they have sold some of their dresses, shirts, and skirts.  Fazilah was so proud showing Prossy and Aminsi her designs the other day when they visited the center to film her.

Fazilah now hopes to buy her own sewing machine and start her own tailoring business.

Stitching a Future Together

How do we educate the forgotten girls?  YOU! You, and others who donate, make it possible for these teen girls to get an education so they can support themselves and have a future!  We can never thank you enough for changing the life of a girl.

With Gratitude,

Mary
