Patience Has Big Dreams!
The other day I drove past our local high school and saw about 50 kids trying out for the football team. It was such an idyllic scene and a feeling of gratitude washed over me for all we have in the U.S. - the freedom that kids can be out on a field playing, and the hope and excitement of a new school year.
It's such a contrast to what many kids in rural Uganda and other parts of the world face.
Patience, a teen girl in Kamuli, Uganda, was in danger of having to drop out of school. She was fearful that each day of classes would be her last and that she'd be sent home because her tuition was overdue.
But thanks to you, our amazing community of donors, Patience can now continue her schooling for this year.
Patience made it to her senior 3 level but her mother wasn't able to continue paying for her school fees.
Secondary school in Uganda becomes very expensive and families must fund their child's education, boarding fees, and all supplies (about $1000 USD a year).
When you live on about $1 a day, this just isn't possible. Many children end up dropping out because families often have to choose between having food or sending their kids to school.
Patience sought out our advisor Prossy to ask for help. Imagine the courage that took! She was scared and worried about her future and didn't know what to do.
But you see, Patience has a big goal of being a neurosurgeon. She says she is very interested in how the brain works and wants to be able to make a difference for others in her country.
Patience knows that big goals demand big actions!
We try to keep children in school whenever possible. This is often the best chance they have of getting a job where they can support themselves and a future family. For girls in rural Uganda, staying in school can keep them safer and from forced early marriage.
Patience has just finished her second term and has done well in her courses. She asked that I say, “Thank You!” to all of you on her behalf. She was overcome with relief and joy!
Our hope is to be able to continue helping to support her education next year.
Thank you for investing in Patience's education and her big dream!
With Gratitude,
Mary
