Hatching a Better Future
It was just about a year ago when our advisor Prossy came across Abiba. This single mother was devastated when the land she had her cabbage crop on was seized and her crop destroyed.
Abiba was left with no way to support her children. She tried to do some digging for others in their gardens to earn money. She also tried to get some vegetables to sell by the roadside for some income.
But Abiba knew this wasn't going to keep them going and provide enough food. Prossy was impressed by Abiba's determination and went to work figuring out a path to help her.
Chickens and eggs are in high demand in Uganda, and Prossy and Abiba agreed this would be a good business for her.
Prossy worked with Abiba and they created a budget.
Then Abiba attended training to learn how to care for the chickens and run a successful business.

You, our donors, came through donating to Abiba's project that was posted on our crowdfunding page on DonorSee. Then construction began on the chicken coop on Abiba's small plot of land.
There was a lot of excitement the day the chicks finally arrived. Abiba was starting to feel hopeful about her business and her future.
In about a month these chickens will begin laying eggs and that's when Abiba's business will really take off.
You have to watch this short video of Abiba with her chickens! Our team member Hilda couldn't get out of the coop fast enough!
We see many strong, determined women like Abiba working hard to build a business so they can feed their children and send them to school. Our women's groups continue to grow in the rural communities.
They have become such a strong support system for each other.
Supporting women-owned businesses with microloans and education has been one of the most successful and sustainable programs we've done to break the cycle of poverty for children in Uganda.
The goal is for people to live without aid, and supporting these strong, determined women is a path to making that happen!
With Gratitude,
Mary
